How Much Should You Tip This Holiday Season?

Holiday tipping season has a way of sneaking up on people. One minute, you are planning gifts and meals, and the next, you are wondering who to tip, how much to give, and if you are doing it all wrong.

Here is the truth most experts agree on. Holiday tipping is a personal gesture of gratitude, not a strict obligation. It is about saying thank you in a way that feels honest and manageable. The most important rule is simple. Give what fits your budget and feels sincere for the relationship you have.

The Guiding Principles

Feeling short on cash this season doesn’t make you ungrateful. Decide on a realistic amount for tipping—even a small sum—and commit to it. Your peace of mind matters more than trying to meet someone else’s expectations.

Consider the relationship rather than the dollar. Frequency and reliability carry far more weight than a rigid guideline. A dog walker who shows up rain or shine every week plays a bigger role in your life than someone you see sporadically. Years of consistent service also merit more acknowledgment than short-term help.

Most importantly, remember the spirit of a holiday tip. It’s a gesture of thanks for care and dedication throughout the year. If cash isn’t an option, a sincere handwritten note is a perfectly acceptable and appreciated alternative.

General Guidelines to Help You Land on Air Amounts

For regular household and personal care providers, many experts point to a simple benchmark. Aim for up to the cost of one service or up to one week’s pay. This works well because it feels balanced and fair. A house cleaner might receive pay for one visit. And a hairstylist or barber could receive the cost of a haircut. A massage therapist, personal trainer, or dog walker might receive one session or one week’s pay.

For full-time help, the scale changes. A full-time nanny or live-in housekeeper is often tipped one week to one month’s pay. Families often add a small gift from the children, which makes the gesture warmer and more personal. For daycare staff, cash or gift cards in the range of $25 to $75 per person are common. Even a modest amount can feel meaningful when paired with a sincere note.

Building staff follow a different set of customs, especially in larger cities. A superintendent or resident manager often receives a higher amount, typically between $150 and $300. Doormen and concierges often receive $75 to $200, depending on how often they help you.

Porters, handymen, and garage attendants usually fall in the $25 to $75 range. Many buildings provide a suggested guide, which can remove a lot of stress.

Municipal and corporate employees usually follow strict rules. Mail carriers, for example, can only accept non-cash gifts valued at $20 or less. A small gift card, a snack, or a thoughtful item fits the bill. Package delivery drivers are typically under similar restrictions, so small gifts or treats are safer than cash.

Private trash collectors often expect tips between $10 and $30, though local policies may vary. When unsure, check guidelines or ask directly.

Thoughtful Alternatives That Still Feel Generous

Etiquette experts agree that a heartfelt note or simple acknowledgment goes a long way and is highly appreciated. Express thanks for their service, care, and reliability. Words of genuine gratitude often matter more than the value of the gift.

Homemade treats can also be a nice touch, provided they are prepared thoughtfully. Clearly label ingredients to respect allergies and preferences. If you’re unsure, prepackaged items are a safer choice. The goal is to show kindness, not to create stress or risk for the recipient.
