Law school is drawing more applicants in 2026 as graduates weigh another three years of education against a difficult early-career job market. The number of people applying to American Bar Association-accredited law schools rose 8% this year, following an 18% jump in 2025. That puts the current applicant pool at its highest point in more than a decade.

According to data from the Law School Admission Council, 82,484 people applied to ABA-accredited law schools in 2026. The figure is the largest since 2010, when applications surged during the Great Recession.

The increase also comes as law school continues to attract graduates looking for an alternative to a weak entry-level employment market. Admission consultant Mike Spivey described the multi-year growth as significant and warned that it has created intense competition among applicants.

ABA-accredited schools enrolled 42,817 new J.D. students in 2025. Based on that figure, slightly more than half of this year’s applicants could eventually begin law school this fall. Official 2026 enrollment numbers are expected in December.

A Weak Job Market Is a Factor

Recent college graduates are facing a tougher employment environment than the broader workforce. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York puts unemployment among recent college graduates at nearly 6%, compared with about 4% for all workers.

That gap can influence decisions about graduate education. Law school, like other advanced-degree programs, can provide students with a way to continue building credentials while waiting for hiring conditions to improve.

The pattern has appeared before. Law school applications climbed sharply around 2010 during the Great Recession and rose again in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted entry-level hiring.

Legal Jobs May Shape Interest

Employment results for recent law graduates have also contributed to the appeal of a J.D. The class of 2024 recorded an employment rate above 93%, a record high.

Still, the latest employment data offers a more mixed picture. The National Association for Law Placement reported that the 2025 graduating class had a high employment rate partly because it was smaller. At the same time, the actual number of entry-level legal positions declined in several areas, including large law firms and government.

That trend could affect future application numbers. Susan Krinsky, executive vice president for operations at the Law School Admission Council, said concerns about artificial intelligence reducing demand for entry-level lawyers could discourage some prospective students.

Law programs with a stronger focus on AI, however, could attract applicants interested in adapting to those changes.

Politics Also Influences Applicants

Political uncertainty may be another reason people choose legal education. Bekah Saidman-Krauss, the council’s director of candidate engagement, noted that applications increased significantly in 2017, following the start of President Donald Trump’s first term.

Applicants frequently discuss political and social issues in personal statements and interviews. Saidman-Krauss said many want to participate in advocacy and policy debates, making legal education an appealing foundation for that work.

The 2026 application figures show that interest in law school remains strong, even as employment prospects and the legal profession face new questions. With 82,484 applicants competing for a limited number of seats, admission is likely to remain competitive.

At the same time, employment trends, AI adoption and political developments could influence whether this growth continues into the next admission cycle.
